While
writing Topps "other" TV adapation, The X-Files,
provided an outlet for darker, heavier thoughts, the Duckman
comic, based on the USA TV animated series created by Everett
Peck and produced by Klasky Csupo, was a terrific release
of anxious energy, a bold license to spoof anything and everything
in sight, to take no prisoners, offend all that is offendable.
When
asked how he prepared to write Duckman, Petrucha
would explain that all that was needed was a heavy dose of
caffeine to induce the duck-like tension in his own psyche.
Like
the incredibly under-appreciated animated series, the comic
never quite took off. After a three issue mini-series
and a four issue monthly book, the comic series was cancelled.
An issue-long satire of Star Trek, Bablyon 5, et. al., was
sadly never released. As a final note, while working
with licensors on other properties was sometimes problematic,
Petrucha's experience with the creators and handlers of Duckman
was always terrific.
